Website Clarity

The work behind a website matters as much as how it looks

I've spent years building, running and developing websites.

Some I've built from the ground up. Others have needed improving, restructuring or figuring out when something wasn't working as it should.

Along the way I've worked across the parts people see — the pages, content and enquiry journey — and the parts they don't, including code, site structure, technical search setup, internal linking, tracking and functionality.

And I've learned some of the most useful lessons by seeing what happens when a website isn't doing enough.

That's ultimately where Website Clarity came from.

An expensive lesson in website traffic

I've run a commercial website where thousands of pounds were spent on Google Ads.

Paid advertising brought people to the website and generated business.

But there was a problem underneath it.

The website itself wasn't set up to develop meaningful organic search traffic of its own.

So we were paying to bring in traffic that the website could have been doing far more to earn naturally.

That experience changed the way I thought about websites.

It made me much more interested in what happens before you spend more money getting people there.

  • Does the website represent everything the business offers?
  • Does it have the pages it actually needs?
  • Is it answering the questions potential customers are researching?
  • Can Google and Bing find and understand those pages?
  • Is the information structured and connected in a way that makes sense?
  • And once somebody does arrive, is there a clear route towards becoming an enquiry or customer?

Advertising can be valuable. But paying for more traffic doesn't fix the website underneath it.

So I approached another website differently

When I built another website from the ground up, I put those lessons into the website itself.

Instead of starting with advertising, I concentrated on building a stronger foundation.

The services were clearly represented. Relevant locations had a place in the structure. I researched the questions potential customers were asking and created detailed, useful guides around them.

Those guides weren't treated as an isolated blog. They were connected to the relevant services and other information across the website.

And underneath it all, I worked on the structure and technical foundations that help search engines and other systems access and understand what's there.

The results gave me a very different experience of how a website can bring people into a business.

They showed me something I've come to believe quite strongly: the different parts of a website work better when they're built to work together.

There wasn't one SEO trick behind those results. It was the combination of structure, services, locations, useful information, internal linking and technical foundations.

That's the thinking behind Website Clarity

Most business owners shouldn't need to know whether they have an indexing problem, weak internal linking, missing service pages, poor site architecture or information that AI systems struggle to interpret.

They have a business to run. And from the outside, many of those problems are almost impossible to see. The website can look absolutely fine.

That's why Website Clarity starts by looking at the website rather than trying to sell a predetermined package. I want to find the things that are actually worth knowing about.

Sometimes that's a technical problem. Sometimes there's an obvious gap in the website. Sometimes there's a much bigger opportunity around the information people are searching for. And sometimes there may be very little I'd recommend changing.

The website decides where the conversation starts.

How do I know if my website is actually working?

I still build things

Website Clarity isn't a move away from building websites. The fact that I build them is a large part of how I look at them.

I understand what goes into the structure underneath the visible pages, how different parts of a site connect and what can be involved in actually implementing a change.

So I'm not limited to identifying problems. If something is worth fixing, I can usually take the work further — whether that's improving what's already there, creating something that's missing or taking on a much larger website project.

I use automation. I don't outsource the judgement to it.

There are some things computers are very good at checking. I use automation and technical tools to help uncover things that would be slow or difficult to investigate manually.

But that's only part of the process.

A piece of software can produce a list of warnings. It can't decide which two or three are actually worth a business owner's attention. That's the part I review myself.

I'd rather tell somebody about a small number of things that could genuinely matter than send them a huge automated report simply because it looks impressive.

Website Clarity is deliberately straightforward

The basic idea is simple.

  • Find what's getting in the way.
  • Explain it clearly.
  • Fix it where there's a worthwhile reason to.

There's no requirement to understand the technical terminology first, buy a package or commit to ongoing work.

If you do want me to carry on developing the website after an initial project, that's something we can look at too.

But it starts with understanding the website you already have.

Start with your website

If you'd like to know what I think is most worth your attention, send me your website.

I'll run the relevant checks, review the results myself and send you the 2–3 things I think are most worth knowing, usually within 2–3 working days.

If I find something worth fixing, I'll also tell you what I'd charge to do the work.
